Nuxeo : Roadmap 5.2

At the following address http://www.slideshare.net/ebarroca/nuxeo-roadmap-200806/ , you can find the future version Nuxeo's 5.2 (aka Chicago) roadmap.

What's new to remember? Let's begin a quick tour ...

Addons System
Based on a plugins system (Addons), Nuxeo begins to expand its components library. It tries to support and cover the entire perimeter of ECM functionality . The idea of an components architecture complying with "standards" as Maven and OSGI is one of Nuxeo strength. Over time, we are seeing (by the community or by Nuxeo) plugins that increase user experience.
By simply adding a file (.jar) in a standard installation folder, you can have modules such as:

  • Creating JSR-168 portlets ,
  • Creating a photo library via image management,
  • REST Components,
  • Virtual Directory ....

For more informations on available plugins for 5.1.4, follow the following address: http://download.nuxeo.org/addons/jsp/listing.jsp?version=5.1.4

Ditto for the 5.2.M1: http://download.nuxeo.org/addons/jsp/listing.jsp

Core Repository
Another strength of an ECM system like Nuxeo is its compliance with JSR-170 specifications. It's possible to manage, in an identical manner and whatever the real storage system, persistence and access to content.
The 5.2 version will carry the latest version of the JackRabbit API (1.4.) (JSR-170 Reference Implementation )
We can also note the presence of a native SQL object storage system with db4o.

Infrastructure Level :
Nuxeo 5.2 is available with Glassfish, Jboss 4.2 and Jetty (Java 6).

User Interface Level :
We can notice a web engine integration (website management, wikis, blogs ... + scripting languages integration) and widgets.
It's a major step to WCMS for Nuxeo 5. As a reminder, following the principle "Everything is content!" the Web Content Management (WCM) is important for an ECM solution.

RIA / RCA
Do you need some help to create your own rich client application outside Nuxeo 5 or to integrate rich components to Nuxeo ? Several solutions are possible!
  • The 5.2 version will allow closer integration between Flex and Nuxeo with the project Flamingo.
  • The integration of Google widget will be possible in Nuxeo.
  • And of course, Nuxeo RCP (another Nuxeo strenght) will continue to grow!

Query
An important Nuxeo feature is its ability to make research via its query language NXQL (Have to see if you do not know!). Research in Nuxeo could be made and deported on another search engine via extensions.

Social Features
The future Nuxeo version will have new add-ons:
  • For documents annotation. (possibility to add notes on any file type without modifiying original file: W3C Annotea Draft)
  • For monitoring actions carried out in a workspace via a TimeLine
  • For tags management on documents
  • Presence service ?

News
In the category of novelty (something that keeps me at heart and that I'd like to test)we can notice the integration of a rules engine as Jboss Rules (Drools). To simplify life for both developers and users there is nothing better! An ECM solution must integrate this type of tool! In addition a graphical user interface is scheduled :o)

Improvements
In the future, we note
  • Work on simplifying the workflow API ! :-)
  • An improvement and better management of notifications via JMS

Finally for us developers
  • One thing, that I also forward, is the creation of an integrated development environment for Nuxeo 5 in Eclipse! There is no doubt that Nuxeo knows well Eclipse (RCP of course) that's why the result could be impressive (a real professional environment) :o)
  • It should be noticed the improvement of Nuxeo Shell administration tool.

And finally for us users

  • A set of plugins for Internet browsers and Office suites (Open or MS) will be available for backup, sharing and loading information. Indeed, If you want a great user experience, you must give this kind of tools. For example, you write a paper on Word, next you can save it directly into the system via the Nuxeo plugin. Thus this document is now managed, shared and accessible to all people!

This is the road to an ECM World .....
